Mayan Music Revival

Mayan Music Revival

The gradual eroding and disappearance of the music, art and language of indigenous peoples represents both the demise of these unique people, and the continued slide toward a globalization of culture.

The Center for Mayan Music (CMM) will support, preserve and distribute both the traditional and contemporary music of indigenous Mayan communities of Chiapas, Mexico. The CMM will educate indigenous musicians through workshops and festivals, construct a high-quality recording studio, publish and distribute Mayan music locally and internationally, and eventually establish a permanent music school to train traditional and new generations of Mayan musicians.

Schools for Chiapas has recorded and distributed over a dozen CD’s of original music from the Zapatista movement.  These recording are now being used by the artists and plans are underway for additional recordings.  In addition we are making available a variety of music resources to autonomous education programs.

More recently, SFC has distributed a unique songbook that notates 50 songs of Chiapas and the Zapatista struggle. The publication and distribution of this book throughout Chiapas has expanded our dialogue with Chiapas musicians. Their desire to learn more about music notation in order to preserve and share their music, improve their performing skills, perform with musicians from other areas, and record and distribute their music, is the genesis of this project.
