Located in the refugee encampment of Pulho this class room celebrates the years and years of support by NEA Peace and Justice caucus activist Paul Mann for the autonomous indigenous schools of Chiapas, Mexico.

Key to the success of these education promoters are regularly scheduled trainings and encounters which bring together promoters from many of the Mayan communities' autonomous schools. These lively and upbeat gathering are filled with laughter and inspiration lurks at every turn. The gatherings often continue for as long as two or three weeks with intensive discussions, demonstration lessons, and occasional presentations by invited guests. Creative and innovative educational plans are conceived and solidified during these self-directed explorations of actual classroom and community practice.
Schools for Chiapas supports the learning of autonomous education promoters through mini-grants to provide transportation, food, and materials for specific encounters of education promoters in each of the five zones of Chiapas, Mexico. In addition, we occasionally locate guests with specialized experiences or skill desired by the education promoters.
